Wabanaki Confederacy Conference 2015 in Vermont

Historic International Native American Conference coming to Vermont in 2015

DATES: August 19th through Aug 22nd

LOCATION: Shelburne Farms,1611 Harbor Road, Shelburne, VERMONT 05482

On August 19th of this year, ancient traditional alliances will meet new modern day issues facing native people today. Tribal leaders and delegates from all over New England and Canada will converge on Shelburne Farms for a 4 day conference to discuss issues like the environment, international trade relations, and other important topics to strengthen old tribal relationships. The conference will end on the last day with a public celebration on Aug 22nd.

Chief Don Stevens, from the Nulhegan Abenaki Tribe, was contacted by the Wabanaki Chiefs in late 2014 with a request for the Vermont Abenaki to host the next conference. What makes this event so significant is that the last Wabanaki Confederacy Conference held in the United States by the Western Abenaki people was over 200 years ago. The last conference held below the Canadian border was in 2008 by the Penobscot Nation in Maine.

The Wabanaki Confederacy has been in existence since the 1600’s and included as many as 48 Algonquin Tribes in both the United States and Canada. These tribes consisted of 5 principle nations of Mi’kmaq, Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, and Abenaki peoples. The original purpose of this alliance was to ally with French forces to stop the invasion of the Iroquois Confederacy and British forces against our homeland. The Abenaki people played a critical role in the Confederacy by protecting the Lake Champlain trade route and the western edge of the Wabanaki homeland.

The Nulhegan Band of Coosuk – Abenaki Nation is recognized in the State of Vermont as an Indian Tribe per House Bill 85 and per Statute Title. 1. Chapter 23. V.S.A. § 854
